Fiber gaskets are used to prevent leaks between two irregular surfaces. They are made from compressible material such as graphite, cellulose, aramid fibers, or vegetable fibers. When mixed with a binding (adhesive) system using processes such as beater addition (paper making), compressed sheet, or chemical expansion, combined to a metal core for blowout resistance, they can be stamped into most flat shapes.
Used on older engines & transmissions for decades, composite gaskets were the sealing technology of choice. Depending on the grade of fiber or composite they can be used in all sorts of oils, coolants, and chemicals. Available with surface or edge sealing aid they can be a cost effective solution.
